1840 South Carolina Census of Pensioners
June 1, 1840
The South Carolina 1840 Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services with their names as returned by the marshals of the several Judicial Districts, under the act for taking the sixth census. This was the first census after Patriots or their surviving widows were granted pensions for service in the American Revolution.
While this is most likely a true list of some who served, it must be realized that there were many others who were deceased when this census was taken.
South Carolina replaced Colonial Districts after the war with Counties. From the Ninety-six District came the following counties. Here they are arranged by last name within the counties.
